Arkis's Grand Academy of the Arcane

Situated on the eastern coast of Terultimae and south of Whitelake, Arkis's Grand Academy of the Arcane floats high above the Boundless Desert, with the Bluecap Sea to the east. To the south-west, New Coastview stands, a new ally since their rebuilding.
Floating on the great earthmotes, the Academy was founded a great many years ago by Arkis, known as "The First Mage".
Run now by the Council of Masters, the Academy claims jurisdiction over all arcane magic everywhere, including all mythals and magical phenomena - including the Laws of Magic, a triad of rules that are supposed to keep order and uphold the legacy of Arkis across the known world.
Education is divided into Mage and Sage accreditations, and all Mages and Sages are awarded an Icon, which serves as a form of identification and license for performing magic.
Those who break the laws of the Academy are known as Apostates, and the enforcement branch of the Academy is known as the Seekers - a corps of specialist Mages whose job it is to track down errant magical phenomena, and amongst other things, bringing Apostates in for punishment.
Criminality in the eyes of the Academy is punishable by a ritual known as Unnaming, in which magic is used to fundamentally alter aspects of the person's very being, in order to remove their magical ability, 'so they cannot err with it in future'. The people so altered are known as the Unnamed, and they are generally let free after the ritual's completion - although common wisdom holds that anybody so sundered loses the will to live before long, and reports of suicide amongst the Unnamed are common.
Politically speaking, the Academy tries to present itself as a body that is separate and above matters of nations, but it is in effect a nation in and of itself - to the point of having its own political factions, known as the Traditionalists, who argue that the wisdom of prior laws is sacrosanct and the way to improve upon them is by adding additional laws, and the Progressives, who argue that wisdom should be refined over time and that existing laws should be revised as their reasons for existing fall in and out of applicability.
Presently, on the Council, two Masters are Progressives (the Master of Sky and the Master of Shadows), three are Traditionalist (the Master of Metal, the Master of Crafts, and the Master of Life), and one is a fence-sitter who tries not to let herself be swayed to either party (the Master of Names)
